Professional Biography – Dr John Warner, Chief Customer Officer
Dr John Warner is a recognized battery industry expert, author, public speaker, and experienced sales, business development, marketing, and product management executive with more than 35 years of combined automotive and battery industry experience. Today he serves as Chief Customer Officer for American Battery Solutions, a lithium-ion battery pack manufacturer based in Michigan and Ohio. As one of the co-founders of the company he helped grow the company and the revenues from concept to more than 240-person company and through a successful acquisition by Komatsu Ltd in 2023. He is Founder and President of Warner Energy Consulting LLC where he advises battery technology companies and serves on the board of directors of Soteria Battery Innovation Group and Energy Supply Developers. In his previous battery industry roles, he served as Chief Marketing Officer for Ener1 with global responsibility for all sales and marketing activities, customer relationship, business development, partner strategy, applications engineering, and new concept development. He served as Vice President of Sales & Marketing for XALT Energy, with global responsibility for all sales and marketing activities, customer relationship, business development, partner strategy, applications engineering, and new concept development.Dr Warner served as Director of Sales & Marketing for Magna Steyr Battery Systems NA where he was responsible for leading and executing Lithium-ion battery sales, marketing, and business development activities strategies in North America. In 2009 he moved into the battery industry when he joined Boston-Power as Director of Product Management where he was responsible for business development and Li-ion battery product portfolio for electric vehicle and stationary energy storage systems; launched three new product lines into the market in twelve months. Prior to his work in the battery industry, Dr Warner spent nearly 20 years in the auto industry, much of that with General Motors where he served in a wide variety of leadership roles in program management, portfolio planning, strategy, and powertrain where he was responsible for managing Hybrid and Diesel product portfolio applications, volumes, roll out plans and developing and negotiating internal program charters. Develop short and long-term strategies for diesels and mild-hybrid systems. He served as a global strategic initiative analyst, including various liaison assignments with cross-functional and cultural teams. Framed and analyzed business problems of key significance to the General Motors Powertrain-Europe and Latin America executive team. Dr Warner received his Doctor of Management, Organizational Leadership degree from the University of Phoenix in 2002 with a dissertation topic of “Post-Heroic Leadership: Mid-Level Work Teams in Manufacturing Organizations”. He received his MBA, International Business and Leadership Studies in 1999 and BA in Industrial Management in 1996 from Baker College. Dr Warner has been a certified Project Management Professional since 2000. Since 2017 year Dr Warner has served the global industry trade group NAATBatt International in the roles of President-elect, President, Chairman, and today as Chairman Emeritus. He serves as the Co-Chair for the SAE Advanced Battery Concepts Committee of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) and as a member of several SAE Battery committees. In 2019 Dr Warner served as a reviewer for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Recycling Award program and testified in front of U.S. Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources. He also serves as an advisor to “The Battery Show” conference organizers. Dr Warner is also a published author on lithium-ion batteries. His first book “The Handbook of Lithium-Ion Battery Pack Design” was published in 2015 with a second, updated edition publishing in May 2024. His second book, “Lithium-Ion Chemistries: A Primer” was published in 2019. Both of his books focus on simplifying the complex topic of lithium-ion batteries and their chemistries making it easily understandable and accessible by a wide audience from entry level and mid-career engineers to non-engineering professionals, executives and investors.
